WOW! I have to tell everybody what a great group of folks there are at The Patriot Bar in Cardnington, OH.  They called us (Hospice of Morrow County) a few weeks agot and told us they were wanting to host a benefit for Hospice on September 17th.

Many of our board members and staff went down on Saturday and they had an auction, a live band, 50/50 raffle, "chair" massages, cornhole tournement, lots of food ... and of course lots of drink as well.

Our sincere and many thanks to establishment owner Shannon O'Leary and her patrons for making the day a true success.  We hope that you can stop by "The Patriot" sometime, lift a cold one and say "Thank You" to the crowd.

Morrow County Breakfast to Benefit Habitat For Humanity

This Saturday, May 28th, First Presbyterian Church of Mount Gilead (OH) will once again be hosting their "Fourth Saturday" breakfast from 7am until 10am at the church basement located at 55 N. Cherry Street, Mount Gilead, OH

Each fourth Saturday of the month, the good folks at First Presbyterian Church host a hearty home-cooked breakfast and the profits/proceeds go to a local non-profit organization. 

Those non-profits include: Hospice, Helpline, Turning Point, Clothes Closet, Special Olympics, United Way, and others.

There's always a steady stream of folks wanting to "chow down" but rarely will you have to stand in line.  Menu items vary month to month, but include; Mike's omelettes, biscuits and sausage gravy, pancakes and bacon or sausage, eggs cooked to order, and more.  All meals include coffee, juice, toast and/or fruit.

These breakfasts are always well attended and the church folk are happy to have the opportunity to meet others from the community and share the fruits of their labor with local non-profits.

So put it on your calendar, this Saturday the 28th, 7am-10am at 55 N. Cherry Street in Mount Gilead.  The parking lot is right across High Street from the Mount Gilead Post Office.  We hope to see you there!

Committed to empowering people through knowledge and resources, HelpLine facilitates the recovery and stability of the emotional, financial and information needs of the Delaware and Morrow County communities.

"Cuttin' The Cheese" in Mount Gilead, you say?  What the devil can this post be about?

As a local Mount Gilead and Morrow County, OH Realtor, it always makes me feel good when someone that I've had the pleasure of working with in a real estate transaction "does good" on their purchase.

A great example is a fine young couple, Ben & Lisa Sippel who purchased a 73 acre farm I had listed a few years ago.  It was time for Virgil and Pearl to retire off the farm after 46 years and Ben & Lisa (then 23 years old) were the perfect couple to buy it and give it all their love, ambition, and energy.

With Ben tending to the farm full time and Lisa then still teaching school, they started the farm business growing certified organic produce and selling it through "shares" sold by CSA's or Community Supported Agriculture.  Customers of the CSA pay one flat annual price and receive weekly shipments of absolute sweet, juicy, fall off the vine fresh organic produce.

Now, about 5 years later, Lisa has become a full time stay-at-home farmer and Mom and with her help, the Sippels have started their new venture, producing and selling naturally aged raw milk cheese.  Their cheese's are heavenly and are produced from their own herd of sheep as well as from a neighboring farmers herd of cattle.

Mount Gilead Breakfast to Benefit YMCA of Morrow County

Once again, the Presbyterian Church of Mount Gilead, (OH) puts on their 4th Saturday Breakfast with 100% of the proceeds going to benefit a local non-profit agency that serves members of the community.

This month (April) the fortunate recipient was the relatively new YMCA of Morrow County.  Our "Y" has only been in existence for about 3 or 4 years and while some nay-sayers may have said "It won't work", a small team of dedicated folks have worked hard to not only open the doors and equip the Y, but also to market the services and classes to the community and build a consistant, dedicated membership.

Our new "Y" in Mount Gilead serves all of Morrow County and is something that we can all be proud of and we are thankful to those folks who had the vision to bring this fine organization to our community.

The First Presbyterian Church in Mount Gilead delivers a fresh, home-cooked breakfast each 4th Saturday of the month.  Organizations that benefit from these breakfasts, in addition to the YMCA include: Helpline, Special Olympics, Turning Point, Hospice of Morrow County, Clothes Closet, Habitat for Humanity of Morrow County and many others. 

We'd like to suggest that you put the "4th Saturday" on your calendar and plan on coming to the next breakfast, served from 7am - 10am at a cost of only $5 all to benefit worthy non-profit organizations of Morrow County.

Mount Gilead Excited About 8 Sisters Bakery

Mount Gilead is excited to share a new business in our downtown district.  8 Sisters Bakery has come to town and offers always fresh baked on-site breads, pastries, donuts and much more.

I was in the day after they opened and bought an apple fritter and boy was it yummy!  Kathy and I have been in a few times since to get fresh bread or rolls and we're always greeted with a smile and friendly service.

So come on in to Mount Gilead, stop on in at 8 Sisters Bakery on S. Main Street and introduce yourself and see what scrumptious goodies they have for you today!

Morrow County Gets Stimulus $ For Hi-Speed Internet.

Just published in Business First of Columbus, Consolidated Electric Cooperative, one of Morrow County's residential electricity providers, has applied for and will be receiving nearly $2.4 million in loans and grants to install 166 mile fiberoptic network in Morrow and Delaware Counties.

The installation will take place in 2010 and this will be the availability of high-speed internet access to hundreds, perhaps thousands of Morrow County residents who are currently able to only use the slower "dial-up" internet access.

Hi-Speed internet access is not just for the kids to play games. Many employees are finding that their employer is allowing, even welcoming and encouraging their employess to telecommute. Not only does it save the employee gas money and wear and tear on the family car, but it also allows the employer to pay less rent for valuable office space.

Telecommuting benefits all of us in that it is a "green" initiative with fewer automobile emmissions, less fuel consumed and fewer office building heating and air conditioning plants running.

This new federal stimulus money being infused into the Morrow County infrastructure is exciting. Although many of us will not see the "larger picture" effects of this for some time to come, (in the way of new businesses and increased telecommuting), it'll most definately bring smiles to the faces of hundreds or even thousands of Morrow County residents who are currently waiting and tapping their nails on the desktop while their requested web page downloads.

I never developed this blog as a platform from which to preach my political opinions (or anyone else's for that matter), but it IS about Morrow County, Ohio and the people, businesses and points of interest.  The purpose of this blog is to provide a platform where prospective residents from outside Morrow County can come and find out a little about us and our neighborhoods.

To that end, I publish these pix.  Kathy and I were at dinner last night (our date night for 35 years now) and the last few years we typically go out with Kim and Mike along with Dick and Della and more recently Mark and Cindy have been joining us.  The picture to the left is the gang at House of Hunan in Marion a few weeks ago.  You can see my review of House of Hunan by clicking here

Well anyway, last night Mike and Kim picked us up and we headed over to Marion because Kim needed to stop into Odd Lots afterward.  When we got in the car, Mike proudly removed from his pocket this picture of he and President Barack Obama standing next to each other.  This is not trick photography!  A few weeks ago, when President Obama came to Cleveland, Mike was invited to attend and was given one of the VIP seats, being both the Mayor of Mount Gilead and also a strong Democrat and supporter of President Obama.  Mike tells us the President's visit was held in a school in the Cleveland area and after the public meeting ended, the President's aides invited some of the "local" politicians and supporters into classrooms so that these small groups could then meet with and talk with the President.  Pretty cool, eh?
